What a complete waste of time…seriously.

I spent from early this morning until about two hours ago (late Friday night) fighting a computer virus on my computer. One of my buddies sent me a weird IM and I figured that since I hadn’t heard from this guy in a while and since it was early in the morning - and since my computer is locked up like Fort Knox - why not give it a click? Every now and again one of the guys finds some completely hilarious stuff on the internet for me to take a look at, so why not this time?

As I clicked the link I knew it was probably wrong to do so, but I did it anyway. An .exe downloaded itself to my desktop. I couldn’t remember the name if I tried, but after a quick Norton 2005 Anti-Virus scan that said the file was clean, I double clicked it.

Hello virus!

This stupid “EliteBar Toolbar” puts itself on my Internet Explorer, Firefox spurs random tabbed locations, various pop-up ads are showing on my computer…I was fucking irate.

I tried every last trick in my book to get this thing off. I managed to remove the EliteBar from the Internet Explorer, only to have the pop-ups remain. And after a quick restart, the toolbar reintroduced itself again. Completely ridiculous.

So, feeling helpless (and this is an internet dork saying that he felt helpless), I turned to the folks at GeekstoGo.com for some assistance.

Impressive.

The technician - loophole - had my problem diagnosed and fixable within two hours. I was amazed.

Two morals here, folks. First, don’t click anything that is sent to you. Second, use GeekstoGo.com when you need assistance with this type of situation!
