Perspective on Hurricane Relief

What a disaster those folks in New Orleans and the entire Gulf Region are going through. In order to bring back the region, those people are going to need a lot of prayer, a lot of rebuilding, and ultimately - a lot of money.
So I’m not going to give a perspective on the damage done and the lives lost - you can check any worthy news website and find out that information. FOXNews.com, CNN.com, and USAToday.com have all been great sources of news for information the devastation. I highly suggest checking them out for information on the current situation.
I would, however, just like to say a few brief words about getting some money down to the lower part of the United States to help the rebuilding effort. In short, I wonder what the international response will be.
Sure, we’ll get some “disaster relief” supplies from the international aid organizations and we’ll get some specialists from our friends like Germany, England, and Canada - but what about the rest of the world?
When will the countries who have benefited from American tax payer dollars for decades return the favor? Now before you bleeding hearts start your “America is the richest country in the world, we don’t need the help” bullshit, take a realistic perspective on how these countries can help.
America is the richest country in the world because it has to be - we are an economic machine. As such, the price of our goods are well above the cost of similar goods in other countries (and most of the time it’s the same quality, if not a worse quality if made in America). So how can we ask for help from these countries that have received our aid for all of these years?
Sell us cheap supplies to rebuild. Buying lumber in one of those “depressed” countries will reduce the cost of rebuilding. Better yet - thank us for that aid money by just giving us the supplies and using some of our aid money to pay for it.
It is cheaper for European and Asian countries to produce the medicines that are sorely needed in our Southeastern Region now. Donate some of these medicines to our recovery efforts.
Do something!
America has given and given and given and yeah, we may be the richest country in the world, but as the richest country in the world we produce products that are more expensive to buy here than in the rest of the world. Let us buy your goods - better yet, donate some of your goods to our recovery effort. It’s not too much to ask…not when you take into account everything that we’ve done for our fellow men on this planet.
