“Losing the War in Iraq”

How many times in the last month have you heard some idiot on the television say, “We’re losing the war in Iraq. This is war that we cannot win. We have been defeated in Iraq,” etc, etc?

I’m sorry, but does this make any sense to anyone?

How do you lose a war that you already won? The mission for the Iraqi War was to dismantle their existing government, capture Saddam Hussein and bring him to justice, and set-up a democracy in the heart of the Middle East.

Hello! Idiots! All of those goals have been met! Saddam is on trial in an Iraqi court, the Coalitional Provisional Authority was disbanded over a year ago and power handed over to the Iraqis (who just had something like their fourth free and independent elections), and the Baathist government was destroyed.

Our soldiers remain in Iraq (and there may be some legitimate arguments to bring a good number of our troops home, which is a different post for a different time). Our soldiers are on a different mission these days. The war in Iraq is over. The training of Iraqi security forces is the main goal these days. And that goal is being achieved, albeit slowly.

I just can’t believe that people can realisitically say that America is losing the war in Iraq. That doesn’t even make sense…

I can understand where people might get the idea that your country is losing. Why have more American soldiers been killed since the government fell? That makes no sense. If you’ve already won, what’s all the fighting about? And what ever happened to all those WMD’s you were supposed to find? I thought that was supposed to be the mission, at least it was in 2002, or maybe I dreamed that whole thing. So it makes sense that people might think you haven’t won. You’ve accomplished part of the goal, that much is a fact that’s not in dispute, but people shouldn’t be dying in a place where a war has been won.
