About Joe (Updated 5.7.08)
My name is Joe, which if you haven’t deduced yet…you’re a moron. I’m 27 years old and I live on the Jersey Shore for the time being. In May 2006 I earned a Master of the Arts in Public Policy from Rutgers University. The plan is to eventually go back and get a Doctorate when I can afford it. I’m not sure when this will be, but I think I should pay down some of my existing student loan debt, first! My student loan debt is so large that I was featured in a USA Today cover story about outrageous student loan debts. Exciting, huh?
Even though it cost a ton of money I would not have changed a thing about choosing to go to both college and graduate school. Actually, if I would have changed anything, I would have paid down some of the principle on the loans when I was school.
Anyway, the student loans are only a small part of this crazy life. I’m also a volunteer to Sigma Pi Fraternity, International. Currently, I’m the Province Archon for the state of New Jersey (”Province Archon” is sort of like a volunteer Regional Director). Being the Province Archon is a lot of fun, though it is pretty time consuming. As an undergraduate, I was the President of the top-ranked Monmouth University chapter of Sigma Pi Fraternity for two years in a row. Then, in 2004 and I helped to establish the Jersey Shore Alumni Club for graduates of the Monmouth University chapter and anyone living in the Jersey Shore area.
In January 2006 I started my own web design firm called Usable Web Solutions, LLC. It has been a pretty successful venture thus far, but the truth is that it is a very part-time business for me (which some clients just can’t understand). Some folks have wondered why I don’t branch out and start doing major advertising and creating bigger and more powerful websites. Honestly, I just want to create websites that are usable for the people and organizations who buy them. So many times a person stumbles across a website that hasn’t been updated in years and they think to themselves, “Wow - someone probably paid thousands of dollars for this piece of garbage website and it looks horrible now.” I started my company to change that - at least on a local level.
In Fall 2007, I started teaching at night as an Adjunct Professor at Monmouth University. Right now I teach government-themed introductory courses. Being a Professor is extremely rewarding for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the opportunity to create a deeper understanding for certain, basic American principles where it may not have previously existed. I also have the ability to create a friendly learning environment; my internal belief on this topic is that the students should not feel that it is “us against them” when it comes to their Professors and the University administration. The students, professors, and administration must have the mindset that “we’re all in this thing together.” In today’s world, the latter scenario is the key to young students opening up their minds.
As far as full-time employment, I work for a statewide community loan fund in Trenton - a job I’ve had since August 2006. I enjoy my work since I enjoy seeing positive changes where people need it most. Much of what I do is related to charter schools in New Jersey - specifically helping them finance facilities for their schools. How many people can say that their job is to help build classrooms for school children? Not many. I also underwrite loans to organizations who want to develop housing, community services, or businesses for “underserved” communities. As a part of this job, I also consult one day a week for a nonprofit commercial redevelopment company out of their Neptune, NJ office.
Now for those of you who feel like you need to know EVERYTHING about me…
I was born in Manhattan, New York and moved to Morris County in New Jersey around seven or eight years old. I had a great time in my high school of 1300+ people, serving as President of my class up until senior year, when I became President of the Student Council. I was also a starting member of our state championship football team (the only state football championship in school history - even through today) and the Captain of our wrestling team. I had a 4.02 GPA when I graduated high school (we had weighted GPAs) and a 3.4 GPA when I graduated from Monmouth University with my Bachelor’s Degree in English. I graduated Rutgers with a 3.9 GPA in my Masters Program.
As far as my love life, I generally keep that private. I’ve had a few girls that I’ve spent a lot of time with and one who I actually was in love with, but nothing major has ever come out of that. I’m single and at this point, I don’t think that I’ll be able to find a New Jersey girl who is not so “high maintenance” that the relationship will be worth it! Lots of the girls in the Northeast have the “Princess Complex” and it’s just too much added aggravation to deal with in my already crowded day. I guess that’s a dreary outlook, but then again, I don’t mind looking out of state for a wife!
At one point I wanted to move to the South/Midwest for a little bit, though I am unsure if I’m still interested in that big of a move away from New Jersey. Not for a long time - maybe a year or two, that’s it. I like living in New Jersey, but the people are really nice in the South/Midwest and the girls are completely unbelievable in terms of looks (they’re smoking hot!). They’re also a hell of a lot less bitchy than 98% of the women in this state, but as I said before, New Jersey is the home of the American Princesses!
That’s pretty much all that I have for this generic “about me” page. If you want to know anything else, you can ask me via e-mail, but chances are that you’re asking a question that you really don’t need to know the answer to. So yeah…that’s all I got!
